Cow’s Milk Allergy
People can complain of two types of allergies when they consume milk:
- Milk allergies
- Lactose Intolerance

Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy
Milk allergy is a essentially a kind of food allergy. Food allergy caused by milk is due to overreaction of your immune system to milks proteins. Several individuals are not able to digest a specific kind of milk protein, casein.
Cow’s milk protein allergy affects 2% to 6% of children, with the highest prevalence during the first year of age.(4)

Milk proteins
Milk contains two primary types of protein:
- Casein
- Whey
While milk contains other types of protein also however casein (80%) and whey (20%) are the two primary types of protein present in milk. The other types of protein present at low levels in milk are antibodies and iron carrying proteins.
While people does not have trouble with whey protein, it is casein and more specifically A1 Beta-casein that people are allergic to. Beta-casein accounts for one third (30 to 33%) of the total protein content in milk.
Cow’s milk contain beta-casein of primarily two types:
- A1 Beta-casein
- A2 Beta-casein
Well, these two types of beta-casein: A1 and A2 just differ by only one amino acid. However, both have different properties.
A1 and A2 Milk
Cow milk contains A1 & A2 Beta-Casein and whey protein. It is said that historically cow’s milk consisted primarily A2 Beta-casein milk. However, over the years due to hybridisation of cow’s, A1 Beta-casein levels started to increase.
Presently, two varieties of cow’s milk are available all over the market i.e., A1 and A2 milk.
What is A1 milk
Today cow’s milk with A1 and A2 Beta casein (and obviously other types of protein) is known as A1 milk.
The majority of cows present all over the world produces A1 milk.
Consumption of milk containing A1 β-casein was associated with increased gastrointestinal inflammation, worsening of post-dairy digestive discomfort (PD3) symptoms, delayed transit, and decreased cognitive processing speed and accuracy. Because elimination of A1 β-casein attenuated these effects, some symptoms of lactose intolerance may stem from inflammation it triggers, and can be avoided by consuming milk containing only the A2 type of beta casein. What is A2 milk
Cow’s milk that contains primarily A2 Beta-casein and negligible or no A1 Beta-casein is known as A2 milk. It has been found that milk containing only A2 Beta-casein is well digested by most kids and adults. (7)
