What is A2 Milk and Where can you buy Desi Cow milk (A2 milk) in your city?

Other than water, milk is probably the most consumed liquid in the world. It is a staple food. From a toddler to people of old age, everybody swears by it. However, with the increase in adulteration (1, 2, 3) or allergic reactions (4, 5, 6) more and more people have stopped consuming milk. That is why now many of us talk about a1 and a2 milk or gir cow milk.

Sources of milk

Sources of milk and milk products include cows, sheep, camel, buffalo camels, goats and others. It is the primary source of nutrients for infants before they can digest other kinds of food.

Milk provides our body a whole lot of nutrients such as fat, calcium, protein, carbohydrates, lactose. No doubt, it has been given a title of a ‘Complete food’.

The demand for milk is ever increasing nowadays.
More than about six billion people consume milk and dairy products on a daily basis. Over 750 million people live in dairy farming households.

Milk is considered the greatest source of calcium for our body.

Calcium from dairy products has a better bioavailability than Calcium from veggies such as kale, collard, broccoli, kelp, soybeans and so on that contains high level of calcium chelating agents.

Cow’s Milk Allergy

People can complain of two types of allergies when they consume milk:

  • Milk allergies
  • Lactose Intolerance

Well, you might be things what is the difference between the two. You should not confuse milk allergy with lactose intolerance.

Lactose Intolerance

Lactose intolerance is not essentially a food allergy. Food intolerance does not involve our immune system. People who are lactose intolerant do not have enzyme lactase, which breaks down lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products.
Therefore, people with lactose intolerance are not able to digest milk. Due to ingigestion of milk they may experience nausea, cramps, gas, bloating and diarrhea. All these symptoms cause discomfort but are never life-threatening.

Steps to help you detect if you are lactose intolerant.

  1. Stop consuming milk or any dairy product for a couple of weeks.
  2. If your symptoms vanish over time, have dairy products back again in your diet, a little at a time, and keep into check how your body reacts.
  3. If your symptoms remain the same after cutting out the dairy products or if they come back, consult your doctor as soon as possible

Cow’s Milk Protein Allergy

Milk allergy is a essentially a kind of food allergy. Food allergy caused by milk is due to overreaction of your immune system to milks proteins. Several individuals are not able to digest a specific kind of milk protein, casein.

Cow’s milk protein allergy affects 2% to 6% of children, with the highest prevalence during the first year of age.(4)

Therefore when you consume milk, its protein can trigger an allergic reaction. You might experience mild to severe issues:

  • Mild milk allergy symptoms
    • Rashes, hives, itching, swelling, etc.)
  • Moderate milk allergy symptoms
    • Breathing problems, wheezing, loss of consciousness, etc.).
  • Severe or life-threatening milk allergy symptoms
    • Anaphylaxis

About 50% of children have been shown to resolve CMPA within the first year of age, 80-90% within their fifth year.

Why milk allergy identification is important

The rate of parent-reported cow’s milk protein allergy is about 4 times higher than the real one in children. (4)

Well, so what it means is that many kids are referred to be allergic to milk as parents are suspicious. Several parents put their kids on diet restrictions without an adequate medical and dietary supervision.
Needless to say these restrictions leads to nutritional unbalances, especially in the first year of age. Therefore, you must ensure an accurate diagnosis of cow’s milk protein allergy to avoid:

  • Risk of rickets
  • Decreased bone mineralization
  • Anaemia
  • Poor growth
  • Hypoalbuminemia
  • Malabsorption.

Diagnosis of Milk Protein Allergy

The diagnosis of cow’s milk protein allergy is based on:

  • Detailed history of symptoms
  • Skin prick test
  • Serum specific IgE to cow’s milk protein
  • Elimination diet
  • Oral food challenge.

Oral food challenge, open or blind, remains the ‘gold standard” to definitely ascertain children with food allergy when the diagnosis is unclear.

Milk proteins

Milk contains two primary types of protein:

  • Casein
  • Whey

While milk contains other types of protein also however casein (80%) and whey (20%) are the two primary types of protein present in milk. The other types of protein present at low levels in milk are antibodies and iron carrying proteins.
While people does not have trouble with whey protein, it is casein and more specifically A1 Beta-casein that people are allergic to. Beta-casein accounts for one third (30 to 33%) of the total protein content in milk.
Cow’s milk contain beta-casein of primarily two types:

  • A1 Beta-casein
  • A2 Beta-casein

Well, these two types of beta-casein: A1 and A2 just differ by only one amino acid. However, both have different properties.

A1 and A2 Milk

Cow milk contains A1 & A2 Beta-Casein and whey protein. It is said that historically cow’s milk consisted primarily A2 Beta-casein milk. However, over the years due to hybridisation of cow’s, A1 Beta-casein levels started to increase.
Presently, two varieties of cow’s milk are available all over the market i.e., A1 and A2 milk.

What is A1 milk

Today cow’s milk with A1 and A2 Beta casein (and obviously other types of protein) is known as A1 milk.
The majority of cows present all over the world produces A1 milk.
Consumption of milk containing A1 β-casein was associated with increased gastrointestinal inflammation, worsening of post-dairy digestive discomfort (PD3) symptoms, delayed transit, and decreased cognitive processing speed and accuracy. Because elimination of A1 β-casein attenuated these effects, some symptoms of lactose intolerance may stem from inflammation it triggers, and can be avoided by consuming milk containing only the A2 type of beta casein. (7)

What is A2 milk

Cow’s milk that contains primarily A2 Beta-casein and negligible or no A1 Beta-casein is known as A2 milk. It has been found that milk containing only A2 Beta-casein is well digested by most kids and adults. (7)
A2 milk is not lactose free milk, it is just like a natural cow’s milk. A2 milk is produced primarily from desi cow (non-hybrid cow’s)

Difference between A1 and A2 Milk in terms of Nutrition

Milk is considered to be a complete food as milk:

  • Contains High-Quality Protein. The protein in A2 milk is well digested instead of A1 milk.
  • Is the top-Source of Calcium.
  • Contains Potassium, a Nutrient Missing in our diets
  • Is a great source of Vitamin D
  • Is an Excellent Source of Vitamin B12
  • Good Source of Vitamin A
  • Excellent Source of Riboflavin:
  • Contains as Much Phosphorus as 1 Cup of Kidney Beans
  • Contains 10% Daily Value of Niacin.

A2 milk benefits

A recent study in China compared the effects of A1 and A2 milk among 45 people. During the study several clinical status and various biomarkers related to dairy intolerance were noted.
It was found that there was a significant reduction in both symptoms and inflammatory markers with the consumption of A2 milk. It was also found that the benefits were observed in both lactose tolerant and lactose intolerant participants. (7, 9)

A1 vs A2 Milk, which one is more beneficial?

Let’s draw a fine comparison:-

  1. A1 Milk can cause intolerance and indigestion as it produces BCM -7 when consumed, whereas the structure of A2 is closer to the human milk beta chain, which doesn’t produce BCM-7 and is healthy.
  2. The mutation in the amino acid chain link of A1 milk causes bad and ill effects on health in humans, thus making A2 a safe option.
  3. According to some experts, drinking A2 milk causes less digestive issues than milk containing A1 beta caseine.
  4. There are several other factors that convince us to switch to A2 milk intake which can make huge impact on health and wellness.

Desi cow milk benefits

Milk from Desi cow has several benefits as it is well digested. Desi cow’s milk primarily contains A2 milk.

Gir Cow Milk

Gir cow is one of the best milkers present among the indigenous cattle. “Bhodali”, “Desan”, “Gujarati”, “Kathiawari”, “Sorthi” and “Surati” are the names they are known as. They have been also named after the “Gir Forest” of Gujarat; the geographical area of the origin of the breed.
They have the capacity to face more hardships and yield more milk even when you feed them less. They are resistant from different tropical regions. Cows of this particular region have been imported by Brazil, USA and Mexico and are being breed there successfully because of their elegant quality.

A2 Milk in India

A2 milk in India is naturally present, as Indian desi cow milk is primarily A2 milk. However, during Operation Flood (when India  transformed milk deficient to world’s largest milk producer) cross-breeding with European cows and import of foreign hybrid breeds led to virtual extinction of desi cow.
However, due to increasing health issues associated with A1 milk consumption more and more Indian’s today are looking for A2 milk. This has led to increase in supply of A2 milk from dairies.

I think you have quoted incorrect rates of Ksheerdham A2 Milk. Instead of Rs. 140 it should be Rs. 92 per ltr. I think Ksheerdham is one of the best supplier who not only supplying the quality but also at very reasonable rate.
